The densification of cities and increasingly modest living conditions impact the way we interact with friends and family. Inspired by our own lack of space, we created a piece that can adapt to varying needs. Rather than using solid timber, we wanted a sheet material with minimal production waste. Having worked with sheet bamboo in cafe interiors, we were impressed with it’s environmental credentials, inherent strength and unique grain structure.
Squarish is comprised of 6 reconfigurable segments, each of which contains shaped bamboo profiles joined by a network of connections, and discrete magnets. Each segment has its own character and is easily detached from the whole to provide extra seating. When combined the 6 segments form a single interior landscape with a gentle transformation along its length. For smaller spaces Squarish is designed to function as a family of 3, 4 or 5 segments.
Removable wool felt seat pads with a specially pleated back fit snugly between the bamboo profiles, their low profile and pleated form allows them to roll for easy storage. Removable frosted inserts combine with the bamboo to form a solid table top and mid shelf.
